Art Macau 2019

China is the birthplace of porcelain, and the invention of porcelain is one of China's biggest contributions to world civilisation. It has had a profound influence on shaping various human cultures and values over thousands of years of history. Today, porcelain is not merely a daily necessity, but also a valuable piece of art, and even a remarkable cultural heritage in diverse places around the globe.

In the history of the development of Chinese porcelain, Macao has played an indispensable role in exporting porcelain via international trade. From the late 16th to the early 17th century, Europeans regarded Macao as a main portal for the ceramics trade. In modern times, many fragments of porcelain can still be found in the coastal areas of Macao.

Sands China has invited Ms. Caroline Cheng, an internationally renowned ceramic artist and curator, to convene a meeting of 27 artists, including herself, from all over the world to create ceramic works under the theme of All That’s Gold Does Glitter. Over 90 ceramic masterpieces will be displayed at The Venetian Macao, The Parisian Macao, Four Seasons Hotel Macao, Cotai Strip, Sands Macao, as well as the Macao Museum of Art. During the exhibition, there will also be a series of activities for the public to participate in to feel the vitality of ceramics and the creative fun of crafting it.

Exhibition Highlights:

A total of 27 international world-class contemporary ceramic artists from 13 countries and regions participated in the exhibition. This is the largest and highest level ceramic art exhibition in the Greater Bay Area in 2019.

Over 90 ceramic masterpieces from outstanding contemporary ceramic artists are featured and most of them are tailor-made and created under the theme of All That’s Gold Does Glitter – a nod to Sands China’s name in Chinese, “Golden Sand.” Among them, three pieces were created by three well-known late ceramic artists, whose works are part of Cheng’s personal collection and are on loan for the exhibition.

Exhibition venues span across four hotel properties of Sands China and the Macao Museum of Art.

The Venetian Macao is the main exhibition venue. In the exhibition layout, the most signature and large artworks are placed in the lobby of each hotel property, so that guests can feel the atmosphere of art and exhibition from the moment they step into the hotel.

The exhibition was curated over the course of 10 months and opens from 10am to 11pm daily for 4 months. It mobilizes nearly 20 internal departments to fully support and participate in the exhibition preparation.

A ceramic art workshop will be held at the Venetian Macao for two weeks during August 10-23. More than ten ceramic artists from Macau, Hong Kong and the Mainland are invited to promote ceramic culture in an interactive way. The event is free to the public and the community.
